“It’s His Dream Job”: DeSantis Reportedly Eyeing Supreme Court Lifetime Appointment as Florida Tenure Winds Down

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is actively negotiating a transition to the federal stage, eyeing high-profile roles in President Donald Trump’s administration or a potential seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. As his tenure in Tallahassee approaches its January 2027 expiration, the term-limited governor is seeking a position to ensure his continued national relevance.

Sources familiar with the discussions indicate that while DeSantis has explored the leadership of the Department of Defense, his “dream job” remains a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. However, immediate focus has shifted toward the U.S. Department of Justice following the recent dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Justice Department Vacancy

The path to the cabinet intensified following a private lunch between Trump and DeSantis at Trump National Doral in Miami. The Justice Department currently operates under Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who stepped in after Trump fired Bondi on April 2, 2026. Bondi’s removal followed a 54–46 Senate confirmation vote a year prior, but she reportedly lost favor due to her handling of high-profile investigative files.

Internal dynamics within Trump’s circle remain complex. While some confidants claim DeSantis is “begging” for the post, others argue Trump requires a level of absolute personal loyalty that the Governor—a former 2024 primary rival—has yet to fully secure.

Ambitions and Judicial Aspirations

Beyond the cabinet, DeSantis is reportedly positioning himself for a future Supreme Court vacancy. Though no seat is currently open, high-level talks suggest the Governor views a judicial appointment as his ultimate political destination.

DeSantis’s record in Florida serves as a template for his federal ambitions. His administration previously faced scrutiny for redrawing congressional maps in North Florida, a move critics say diminished the voting power of a district where Black voters comprised nearly 50% of the eligible population. The Florida Supreme Court eventually upheld the map, a body Holder and other critics claim DeSantis “stacked” with like-minded conservatives.

The 2026 Succession

As DeSantis looks toward Washington, the race to succeed him is already mobilizing. Representative Byron Donalds has emerged as the clear front-runner for the 2026 gubernatorial primary, bolstered by a $67 million war chest and a Trump endorsement. Recent polling shows Donalds holding a commanding lead of 25 to 42 points over his Republican rivals, including Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins.

Official statements from the Governor’s office remain disciplined. Spokesperson Alex Lanfranconi stated that DeSantis “enjoys a great relationship with President Trump” and remains focused on Florida priorities, including Everglades restoration and immigration enforcement. The White House has declined to comment on specific personnel deliberations.
