Ivanka Trump is opening up about the personal cost of growing up inside one of America’s most visible and wealthy families.

On a recent appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast, the former first daughter said her upbringing left her feeling “guarded” and made it difficult to build genuine friendships. Ivanka Trump said being the child of famous, affluent parents created a barrier early in life, as she often questioned whether people liked her for who she was or for her family name and status.

“I do think there’s a natural barrier that goes up,” she said, reflecting on her childhood as the daughter of Donald Trump and the late Ivana Trump. She explained that the fear of being valued for “the wrong reasons” shaped how she related to others from a young age.

Trump, 44, said that mindset followed her into adulthood. At one point in the interview, she acknowledged that she had struggled to maintain close friendships and said some people had disappointed her during difficult moments in her life. While she did not name specific relationships or events, she suggested that her circumstances changed the way some people treated her.

She also linked that concern to her own parenting, saying she now sees similar emotional dynamics in one of her sons, who wants to be appreciated for himself rather than for his family’s prominence. Trump said that desire is healthy and important for a child’s sense of identity.

The former businesswoman described spending years building emotional “walls” to protect herself, but said she has come to believe those defenses can also block meaningful human connection. Trust, she said, does not come naturally to her, but she has made a conscious effort to become more open even at the risk of being hurt.

Trump said she believes that trade-off is worth it if it allows for deeper and more authentic relationships. She added that while she considers herself a strong judge of character, she has worked to avoid becoming cynical.

Her comments offered a rare personal glimpse into a life often viewed only through the lens of privilege, politics, and public scrutiny. Though Ivanka Trump has largely kept her inner circle out of public view, some of her friendships have drawn attention over the years, including her well-known connection with Kim Kardashian.

The remarks add another layer to Trump’s public image, portraying a figure who says wealth and visibility brought not just opportunity, but also isolation.
