J.K. Rowling has spoken out after Harry Potter star Emma Watson discussed their complicated relationship during a recent podcast appearance.

On Monday, Sept. 29, Rowling, 60, posted a detailed message on X addressing “quite a bit of comment” following Watson’s Sept. 24 interview on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast.

Watson, who famously portrayed Hermione Granger in the film series based on Rowling’s novels, starred alongside Daniel Radcliffe, 36, and Rupert Grint, 37, throughout the decade-long franchise.

In recent years, Rowling has drawn significant controversy over her comments on transgender issues, while both Watson and Radcliffe have publicly expressed support for the trans community.

In her post, Rowling began by clarifying, “I’m not owed eternal agreement from any actor who once played a character I created. The idea is as ludicrous as me checking with the boss I had when I was twenty-one for what opinions I should hold these days.”

She added that Watson and her co-stars “have every right to embrace gender identity ideology,” noting such beliefs are legally protected. However, Rowling argued that Watson and Radcliffe “continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created,” long after their acting in the franchise ended.

Rowling’s comments came in response to Watson’s reflections during the podcast, where the actress emphasized the importance of civility and compassion in public debate.

“I just believe that no one is disposable,” Watson said. “And everyone, as far as possible, whatever the conversation is, should and can be treated with dignity and respect.”

She also expressed disappointment that a direct conversation with Rowling never took place. When asked if she would be open to dialogue, Watson said yes, though she stressed she did not want to add to a “toxic debate.”

Despite their differences, Watson acknowledged Rowling’s past kindness toward her, saying she could never “cancel out” the opportunity Rowling gave her with Hermione.

Watson’s latest remarks follow a moment at the 2022 BAFTA Awards that some interpreted as a dig at Rowling. Introduced by Rebel Wilson as “a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch,” Watson responded on stage, “I’m here for all of the witches.” The Independent shared the footage at the time.

Rowling referenced that moment in her recent post, calling it a turning point. She revealed Watson later sent a handwritten note through an intermediary, which read only: “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.”

According to Rowling, this occurred during a period when she was receiving violent threats and had heightened security concerns. She suggested Watson’s brief gesture of concern contrasted sharply with the public criticism, leaving her feeling hurt.
