James Van Der Beek was surrounded by loved ones in his final days.

His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, announced that the actor died at age 48 on Feb. 11. In an Instagram post, she wrote that he “met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.” Van Der Beek had revealed in 2024 that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer the year before.

After the news was shared, friends and loved ones — including several from his inner circle — said they had been with him shortly before he died.

Alfonso Ribeiro commented on Kimberly’s post that he was “lucky [he] got to be there to say goodbye.”

In a tribute on Instagram, Ribeiro wrote that he was “so broken,” describing Van Der Beek as a “true friend, brother and life guide.” He reflected on supporting him through his cancer journey and the emotional highs and lows of treatment.

Ribeiro also said Van Der Beek and Kimberly “changed” his life, adding that he will continue to support their children and that being able to say goodbye will stay with him. “I love you James and know I have a guardian angel watching over me,” he wrote.

Actor Mehcad Brooks shared a similar message, writing that being with Van Der Beek in his final days was “the greatest honor” of his life.

Stacey Keibler also said she spent time with Van Der Beek before his death, describing those days as a “true gift.” In a long post, she wrote about being present with him — sitting together, holding hands, and watching the sunset — and said he shared wisdom and hopes with her. Keibler added that a shooting star appeared as the sun set, which felt like a meaningful reminder in the moment.

Keibler called Van Der Beek a “gift,” an “incredible husband,” and an “extraordinary dad” to the six children he shares with Kimberly. She wrote that it was an honor to be with his family during what she described as sacred moments, adding that while he is gone physically, she believes his spirit remains.

Designer Erin Fetherston also confirmed she was with Van Der Beek near the end. In an Instagram post, she wrote that it was an honor to call him a best friend and said she and others would support his family, remember to keep dancing, and hold onto joy in his honor.
