House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) issued a blistering response to President Donald Trump on Sunday, warning the commander-in-chief to “keep his reckless mouth shut” after the President labeled the Democratic Party the nation’s “greatest enemy.”

The sharp exchange marks a new low in domestic political discourse as the United States grapples with the economic and military fallout of “Operation Epic Fury” in Iran.

The confrontation began after President Trump took to Truth Social to frame the Democratic Party as a more significant threat to the United States than foreign adversaries. Linking the domestic political divide to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Trump wrote:

“Now with the death of Iran, the greatest enemy America has is the Radical Left, Highly Incompetent, Democratic Party!”

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, Jeffries told moderator Dana Bash that the President’s rhetoric was not only divisive but physically dangerous. “Donald Trump should keep his reckless mouth shut before he gets somebody killed,” Jeffries stated, signaling deep concern over the potential for the President’s words to incite political violence.

The verbal sparring coincides with a growing legislative rebellion against the administration’s military strategy. Jeffries characterized the intervention in Iran as a “reckless war of choice” that has cost American taxpayers more than $30 billion to date.

The Minority Leader highlighted the immediate domestic consequences of the conflict, specifically the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic maritime chokepoint has sent global energy markets into a tailspin, pushing U.S. gas prices to historic highs and exacerbating an existing cost-of-living crisis.

“This administration somehow found the resources, has found billions of dollars for bombs, but can’t find any money to actually bring down the high cost of living here in the United States,” Jeffries said.

As the executive branch maintains its military posture, House Democrats are pivoting toward a legislative counter-offensive. Jeffries confirmed that leadership plans to introduce a War Powers Resolution in short order to force a conclusion to the Iranian operations.

While Jeffries stopped short of committing to a “no” vote on future Pentagon funding, he emphasized a “strong opposition” within the caucus toward continuing a conflict he predicts will “end in failure.”

The White House has yet to issue a formal response to the proposed War Powers Resolution, but the President’s comments suggest an administration dug in for a protracted battle—both abroad and on the House floor.
