Kai Trump, the 18-year-old granddaughter of Donald Trump, is drawing sharp criticism online after outlining a five-year plan centered on professional golf and personal branding—comments critics say reflect a disconnect with broader economic realities.
In a recent TikTok video, Kai said she hopes to graduate college and compete on the LPGA Tour within five years. Alongside her athletic ambitions, she emphasized building a digital presence and launching her own brand.
“I can really see myself hopefully being on the LPGA Tour playing professional golf,” she said. “But also maintaining my socials and create my own brand, as well.”
She added that undisclosed projects are already underway, hinting at “big things in the future.”
The response was swift. Critics flooded comment sections, accusing Kai of being “out of touch” and “tone-deaf,” with some urging her to “read the room”—a phrase often used online to call out perceived insensitivity to current social or economic conditions.
The backlash reflects a broader scrutiny of public figures, particularly those with prominent family ties, navigating influencer-style careers while many young Americans face financial uncertainty.
This is not Kai’s first encounter with criticism. Her social media activity has repeatedly sparked debate, with detractors arguing her posts lack awareness of everyday struggles faced by her peers.
In previous remarks, Kai has dismissed the negativity.
“I just stay away from it… I know who I am,” she said in an earlier interview, adding that public opinion “doesn’t really matter.”
Despite her family’s deep political ties, Kai has consistently distanced herself from politics.
“I stay out of politics completely,” she said, calling the space “dangerous” and advocating for more unity between opposing sides.
Still, even her non-political actions have drawn controversy. She previously faced criticism for publicly supporting Aryna Sabalenka over American star Coco Gauff, prompting accusations of being “un-American” from some online users.
Kai Trump’s situation highlights the growing tension between influencer culture and public perception—especially for young figures tied to high-profile families. As she pursues a dual path in sports and branding, the scrutiny surrounding her public image shows little sign of easing.
