Kate Middleton showed off a new blonde look as she returned to royal duties this week.

On Sept. 4, the Princess of Wales, 43, visited the Natural History Museum’s newly redesigned gardens in London with Prince William, also 43. It was the couple’s first public outing together after their summer break.

Rumors about her lighter hair started in August, but Thursday’s visit confirmed it — Princess Kate now has bright summer highlights and longer locks that fall to the middle of her back. It’s her blondest and longest hairstyle yet. She wore her hair loose in her signature blowout with a side part.

Speculation about Kate’s new style began on Aug. 24, when she was seen driving to church near Balmoral Castle in Scotland with Prince William and their three children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. Her hair looked golden in the sunlight that day, sparking attention.

This marks a change from earlier in the summer. In July, when she attended the Wimbledon Championships, her hair was a rich chestnut shade.

Like many women, the Princess of Wales has tried different hairstyles over the years — short layers, bangs, and highlights. In 2017, she even donated seven inches of her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children who lose their hair from cancer treatment.

Kate has also been open about her own health. She revealed in March 2024 that she was undergoing cancer treatment, later announced in September that she completed chemotherapy, and in January 2025 shared she was in remission.

In January, while visiting The Royal Marsden Hospital, Kate spoke with Katherine Field, a patient wearing a cold cap during chemotherapy. According to the American Cancer Society, cold capping is a scalp-cooling system that helps reduce hair loss during treatment. Field told PEOPLE that Kate said she didn’t use one, adding, “For her to lose her hair, which is so iconic, would have been awful. Everyone loves her hair!”

As patron of the Natural History Museum, Kate’s latest visit was special. She and Prince William met with children and young people taking part in programs that connect students with nature and teach about biodiversity in cities. Even when rain fell during the event, the royal couple smiled and laughed alongside the kids.

This outing came just a day after Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis returned to school for the new year. The family has mostly stayed out of the public eye over the summer, spending time together in private.
