Trump’s Break With Marjorie Taylor Greene Exposes a Deep Split in MAGA Ranks
A sharp split has emerged inside the MAGA movement after Donald Trump publicly severed ties with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of his loudest and most loyal backers in Congress.
In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump announced that he was withdrawing his endorsement of Greene. “I am withdrawing my support and endorsement of ‘Congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the great state of Georgia,” he wrote.
Trump went further, promising his “Complete and Unyielding Support” to any conservative primary challenger who runs against her in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections. He branded Greene “wacky” and a “lunatic,” claiming that all she does is “complain.”
Why It Matters
The rupture between Trump and Greene represents an unusually public and consequential split within the MAGA universe, where personal loyalty to Trump has long been the overriding test. Greene has been one of his most prominent champions, boosting his message to the hard-right base and playing a key role in mobilizing grassroots activists.
Their falling-out could loosen Trump’s grip on a slice of his core support, reshape alliances heading into 2026, and highlight deeper disagreements over strategy, priorities and messaging inside the Republican Party.
What To Know
Several well-known MAGA-aligned figures quickly sided with Trump after he pulled his endorsement.
Conservative commentator Catturd declared, “I’ll support any primary opponent of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Just like Trump, I’m sick of hearing her bullshit every day.”
Activist Laura Loomer applauded the move, writing that “President Trump calls for Marjorie Traitor Greene to be primaried. He said he will endorse a challenger to MTG, and says she has become a ‘ranting lunatic’. Should I move to Georgia?” She added, “I told you all this was coming… @mtgreenee is so cooked.”
Right-wing host Mark Levin praised Trump’s decision as well, saying, “Everyone’s on to Marjorie Traitor GreenE. POTUS just posted he’s withdrawing his endorsement and plans to support a primary challenger. (See below.) I agree 100%. She’s nuts.”
Not everyone in the MAGA sphere is lining up behind Trump, however. Conservative commentator Evan Kilgore wrote on X: “I stand with Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Who else?” The post referenced Trump’s efforts to unseat both Greene and Representative Thomas Massie in 2026, after the two lawmakers openly criticized him.
Greene, once firmly in Trump’s corner, has recently distanced herself from parts of his agenda and clashed with fellow Republicans on a range of high-profile issues.
The current standoff centers on fights over government transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files, competing views on foreign versus domestic priorities, and the broader direction of the GOP as the 2026 midterms approach.
Tensions escalated after Greene criticized Trump’s position on efforts to release remaining records on Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in federal custody in 2019. Greene has backed a bipartisan House push to force disclosure of those files, arguing that survivors deserve answers. “I think it’s a huge miscalculation, and I truly just stand with the women,” she told CBS Mornings, insisting the victims should be at the center of the debate.
Trump fired back on Truth Social, dismissing renewed focus on Epstein as “the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax” and alleging that Democrats were using the issue to distract from their handling of the shutdown and other problems. “Only a very bad, or stupid, Republican would fall into that trap,” he wrote.
He later said the Justice Department, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, would investigate Epstein’s alleged links to prominent Democrats. Greene, meanwhile, was one of only four Republicans who joined Democrats on Wednesday to advance a petition designed to force a vote to release the Justice Department’s full Epstein files.
Their differences extend beyond the Epstein debate. Greene has criticized Trump’s proposal for 50-year mortgages as a way to reduce monthly costs for homebuyers, writing on X, “I don’t like 50-year mortgages as the solution to the housing affordability crisis.”
She has also argued that his tariff strategy has been unevenly implemented and has urged a shift in focus away from foreign flashpoints and back toward domestic struggles. Greene has pushed back on his assertions that inflation has eased and has demanded a more concrete Republican plan to address rising healthcare expenses.
Earlier this year, she became the first Republican member of Congress to describe the situation in Gaza as genocide.
Greene responded to Trump’s broadside on Friday by accusing him of misrepresenting her. “President Trump just attacked me and lied about me,” she wrote, adding that he is “coming after” her in an effort “to make an example to scare all the other Republicans before next weeks vote to release the Epstein files.”
What People Are Saying
Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X:
“President Trump just attacked me and lied about me. I haven’t called him at all, but I did send these text messages today. Apparently this is what sent him over the edge. The Epstein files. And of course he’s coming after me hard to make an example to scare all the other Republicans before next weeks vote to release the Epstein files.
It’s astonishing really how hard he’s fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out that he actually goes to this level. But really most Americans wish he would fight this hard to help the forgotten men and women of America who are fed up with foreign wars and foreign causes, are going broke trying to feed their families, and are losing hope of ever achieving the American dream.
That’s what I voted for. I have supported President Trump with too much of my precious time, too much of my own money, and fought harder for him even when almost all other Republicans turned their back and denounced him. But I don’t worship or serve Donald Trump.
I worship God, Jesus is my savior, and I serve my district GA14 and the American people. I remain the same today as I’ve always been and I will continue to pray this administration will be successful because the American people desperately deserve what they voted for. For me, I remain America First and America Only!!!”
Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“I am withdrawing my support and Endorsement of ‘Congresswoman’ Marjorie Taylor Greene, of the Great State of Georgia. Over the past few weeks, despite my creating Record Achievements for our Country including, a Total and Complete Victory on the Shutdown, Closed Borders, Low Taxes, No Men in Women’s Sports or Transgender for Everyone, ending DEI, stopping Biden’s Record Setting Inflation, Biggest Regulation Cuts in History, stopping EIGHT WARS, rebuilding our Military, being RESPECTED by every Country in the World (as opposed to being the laughingstock that we were just 12 months ago!), having Trillions of Dollars (Record Setting!) INVESTED in the U.S.A., and having created the ‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World from being a DEAD Country just 12 months ago (and so much more!), all I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!”
The president continued:
“It seemed to all begin when I sent her a Poll stating that she should not run for Senator, or Governor, she was at 12%, and didn’t have a chance (unless, of course, she had my Endorsement—which she wasn’t about to get!). She has told many people that she is upset that I don’t return her phone calls anymore, but with 219 Congressmen/women, 53 U.S. Senators, 24 Cabinet Members, almost 200 Countries, and an otherwise normal life to lead, I can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day.
I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support. She has gone Far Left, even doing The View, with their Low IQ Republican hating Anchors. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
What Happens Next
The House of Representatives is preparing to vote on legislation that would require the Justice Department to release all remaining Epstein investigation files — a push championed by Greene and other lawmakers. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has pledged to bring the measure to the floor for a vote, setting the stage for an even more dramatic showdown between Trump, Greene, and their respective allies.
