A Pennsylvania man told authorities he fatally shot his estranged wife’s new boyfriend after discovering the two together at her home, according to police.

Robert D. Naugle Jr., 30, is being held at Westmoreland County Prison following the shooting death of James Thomas on Wednesday. Court documents obtained by local news outlet TribLive.com state that Naugle called 911 around 8:30 p.m. and told dispatchers, “I walked in on my wife with another man, and I killed him.”

Pennsylvania State Police responded to a residence in Hempfield Township, where Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said Naugle’s wife had filed for divorce in November 2025, and the couple had been living apart.

Police said Naugle had planned to spend New Year’s Eve with his estranged wife, but she canceled their plans. He then drove to her home and noticed another vehicle parked in the driveway.

According to court records, Naugle had moved out of the residence two days earlier but still had keys. He allegedly entered through the basement, encountered his estranged wife with Thomas, and fired a Glock pistol at Thomas 10 times. Investigators said Naugle checked Thomas for a pulse before calling 911.

During questioning, Naugle told police he intended to kill Thomas when he shot him.

Naugle has been charged with criminal homicide. A judge denied bail during his arraignment on Thursday, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.
