A man in the United Kingdom has died following a motorcycle crash that occurred while he was delivering vital medical supplies during the holiday season.
Andrew Rogers, 61, of Hayscastle, Pembrokeshire, passed away in hospital on New Year’s Day after a collision on Dec. 29 while volunteering with Blood Bikes Wales, according to a GoFundMe page created in his honor.
Rogers was riding a Honda 750 motorcycle for the organization when it collided with a black Audi A3, the BBC reported. The driver of the car was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and was subsequently released on bail.
Blood bikers are volunteer motorcyclists across the United Kingdom who provide free courier services for blood, organs, plasma and other urgent medical supplies, according to Blood Bikes Wales. They typically operate at night, on weekends and during holidays, when standard transport services are limited.
Rogers’ family described his volunteer work as a defining part of his life. In a statement shared by Blood Bikes Wales on Facebook, they said he was “deeply passionate” about serving others and had volunteered for many years as a street pastor. They added that his strong Christian faith guided his life and actions.
In the GoFundMe campaign, his loved ones wrote that Rogers “never passed up an opportunity to help others,” often dropping everything to assist family members, friends or even strangers in need.
Rogers spent his entire career working as a farmer and was widely known, loved and respected within the farming community. His family noted that he took pride in passing his knowledge on to his children, grandchildren and anyone eager to learn during visits to the farm.
He is survived by his wife, Tricia; daughter, Julie; son, Nathan, and his partner, Penny; as well as his mother, Hilda; brother, Colin; and sister-in-law, Myra. He also leaves behind grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many extended family members and friends.
The GoFundMe, organized by Hannah Jones, stated that in keeping with Rogers’ lifelong generosity, the funds raised will be donated to several charities he supported, including Blood Bikes Wales, Street Pastors, Welsh Air Ambulance and Bethlehem Baptist Chapel.
Blood Bikes Wales also issued a statement, Wales Online reported, thanking the public for the outpouring of support following the collision. The organization expressed its gratitude for the messages, kind words and concern shared on social media, noting how much the support meant to its members.
As the investigation into the fatal crash continues, Dyfed-Powys Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
