Finding the perfect Halloween costume isn’t always easy — especially when you’re expected to match a family theme. One 34-year-old husband learned that lesson the hard way after going rogue on his wife’s carefully chosen idea.
He explained in a Reddit post that he and his wife, who are both 34, share two children. Every year, his wife’s family picks a group costume theme, and this time, they chose Barbie. His wife suggested they go as characters from Barbie Princess Charm School, her favorite movie from childhood.
Unenthusiastic about the idea, the man decided not to confront his wife directly. Instead, he secretly bought a Batman costume.
“I hate this theme and would rather go as something more manly that won’t embarrass me in front of my neighbors and friends,” he wrote. “After work one night I stopped at the store and got myself a Batman costume instead.”
He let his wife think he’d be dressing as Barbie’s love interest and would arrive later to the party after work. In reality, he planned to make a surprise entrance as Batman.

When he showed up, his sisters-in-law greeted him — and were immediately upset by the costume change. He tried to explain that he didn’t like the original theme, but that only escalated things.
“At that point, my wife found me and started yelling about how selfish I was and how this is the one time a year that she gets to let loose and have fun with the theme,” he said. “She told me to leave, so I drove to a friend’s house and spent the night out of anger.”
He added that his wife’s relatives “blew up” his phone, calling him selfish and insulting him. He eventually blocked them and told his wife he needed a few days to cool down. Reflecting afterward, he admitted that he “was being a little selfish” and “should have stuck with the theme,” but still wanted to hear others’ opinions.
Commenters overwhelmingly sided with his wife, arguing that honesty — not masculinity — would have saved the night.
“You so desperately wanted to show everyone how ‘manly’ you are, and instead you’ve made yourself look like the little boy you really are,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Mate, you had the chance to do the most manly thing ever: be a cool dad and husband, own the silly look, and enjoy it. Now your family’s mad and you’re out the cost of a costume. None of that makes you more manly.”
