A 41-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after his SUV struck a horse on a Colorado interstate, authorities said.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, troopers responded to a crash involving two vehicles and a horse in Mesa County. The incident occurred on Interstate 70 eastbound near milepost 22, close to Fruita, during the early hours of Sunday, Feb. 8.

Investigators said a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by a man from Grand Junction and a Ford F-250 operated by a 17-year-old from Peyton were traveling eastbound when a horse entered the roadway.

Both vehicles collided with the animal. Officials reported that the Land Cruiser rolled over and came to rest on its roof. The horse died at the scene, as reported by Fox affiliate KDVR.

Authorities stated that the Land Cruiser driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Ford driver was not injured.

A GoFundMe campaign organized on behalf of the injured driver identified him as Kyle Freud.

“Kyle is one of the most genuine, passionate, and giving people you’ll ever meet,” wrote Seena Miremadi, the fundraiser’s organizer. Miremadi described Freud as a long-standing member of the Land Cruiser and off-road community, known for sharing knowledge, builds, and trail experiences.

The campaign noted that Freud faces a lengthy recovery involving surgeries, rehabilitation, and significant medical care. It also stated that his Land Cruiser was totaled and that he is expected to be unable to work for several months.

In an update posted Tuesday, Feb. 10, Freud’s wife, Jessica Freud, said her husband’s condition had improved.

“He is currently experiencing post-traumatic amnesia (PTA), meaning he has no memory of the crash or events since then,” Jessica wrote, adding that doctors are closely monitoring his recovery.

She also said Freud is scheduled to undergo hand surgery on Wednesday, Feb. 11, to address a finger injury.

“We are so grateful for every donation, share, and kind message,” Jessica added. “Your support is helping cover mounting medical costs, surgeries, rehab, and supporting our family while Kyle fights to heal.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised nearly $15,000.

Attempts to reach Jessica Freud for additional comment were not immediately successful.
