A Vermont man has been arrested after police say he nearly gouged out another driver’s eyes during a road rage fight.
Aaron Williams, 44, is facing charges of aggravated assault and maiming after the incident on Aug. 26, according to court documents reported by WPTZ, WCAX, and Seven Days Vermont. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.
The victim, 46-year-old Ronnie Bushway II, told police that Williams cut him off in traffic and then slammed on his brakes, WPTZ reported. Both men got out of their cars, and Williams allegedly shoved his thumbs into Bushway’s eyes and punched him several times.
Bushway has undergone several surgeries and is still in the hospital with serious vision problems, WCAX reported.
“There’s been so much going on at the hospital with the doctors,” Bushway’s father told WPTZ. “His wife’s been with him the whole time. I don’t know the recovery time, but it sounds like it could be a long time.”
Police said Williams drove away after the assault, but dash cam footage from Bushway’s car helped them identify him, Seven Days Vermont reported.
A bail hearing for Williams is expected in the coming weeks.
