A man shared on Reddit that his 30th birthday turned out to be a disappointment after his girlfriend ignored his only request for the occasion.

According to his post, she had asked what he wanted, and he told her he’d love a small get-together with close family and friends. He even suggested a local bar that offers free reservations for groups of 10 or more. She seemed agreeable at the time, but when his birthday arrived, things didn’t go as planned.

Instead of the gathering he was hoping for, he received just a card and a few small gifts — two gift cards and a book.

When he explained why he was upset, his girlfriend dismissed the idea of planning a party as too much of a “hassle” and said it would have taken too much effort. He told her that it hurt to feel like she ignored what mattered most to him, especially since she had asked directly.

Her response was that he should have planned it himself. She accused him of trying to guilt-trip her and said he was being unfair, insisting he should simply be happy with the gifts she gave.

The man pushed back, saying he was just being honest about his feelings and that she didn’t get to decide whether or not he was allowed to be upset. For him, the deeper issue was realizing that his partner didn’t care enough to try.

Other Reddit users strongly sided with him. Many pointed out that she was shifting the blame and casting herself as the victim in a situation she created.

One commenter wrote that while failing to plan a small gathering was a red flag on its own, the bigger problem was her attempt to turn the situation against him. They described her behavior as manipulative. The same user added that giving gift cards as a birthday present can feel impersonal, almost as though she couldn’t be bothered to put thought into a meaningful gift.
