Nothing beats mom’s cooking—at least according to one man.
On Reddit, a 27-year-old woman shared that her 29-year-old boyfriend made a hurtful comment about her cooking while she was making dinner.
“It wasn’t anything fancy, just pasta with homemade sauce, salad, garlic bread,” she wrote. “Halfway through the meal he says, ‘This is good, but you’ll never be wife material until you can cook like my mom.’ ”
She said she “literally froze” and asked what he meant. Instead of apologizing, he doubled down: “Well, she cooks everything from scratch, three courses, homemade dessert, it’s just… different.”
The woman told him it was “rude” to compare her to his mom and said that if he wanted his mom’s cooking, “he should go eat at her place.” Her boyfriend got angry, accusing her of “overreacting” and claimed he was just being “honest about standards.”

Feeling disrespected, the woman asked Reddit if she was wrong for thinking his comment was completely inappropriate to say to someone he supposedly loved.
Many commenters quickly supported her. One wrote, “You have a momma’s boy here with impossibly high standards you will never meet, because they are designed to make sure you never meet them.”
Another person suggested that the boyfriend probably doesn’t see her as long-term. “He showed what he thinks of you: a placeholder. You are not wife material,” they said. “I would pack my stuff and leave him to find someone just like his mum. This gives you the opportunity to find a real partner who loves you for who you are! Not overreacting, but end this relationship now.”
