A man says his roommate accused him of being “heartless” because he doesn’t want her cat sleeping in his bed — even though he’s allergic.
The 28-year-old described the situation on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, explaining that he shares a two-bedroom apartment with a 26-year-old woman who owns a “super cute” cat named Jon Jon. He said they’d lived together without issues for about a year, but things shifted recently when she began letting Jon Jon wander the apartment at night.
According to the post, the cat has started curling up on the man’s bed while he sleeps. That’s a problem, he said, because while his allergy isn’t severe, too much exposure leaves him with itchy eyes and sneezing.
He noted that he could shut his bedroom door, but doing so makes the room feel stuffy without airflow. On top of that, he said the cat scratches at the door and meows until he gives in.

The man added that he’s asked his roommate — politely, he emphasized — to keep the cat in her room overnight with the door closed. She refused, arguing that confining the pet to one room is “cruel.” He said she then called him heartless and accused him of overreacting, insisting that “it’s just a cat” and isn’t harming anyone. Since then, he wrote, she’s been giving him the silent treatment.
He also said their mutual friends are divided: some believe pets are family and he should tolerate it, while others think he has every right to set boundaries in his own space. He ended his post asking whether he was wrong for standing firm.
Commenters largely sided with him, saying allergies and personal space matter more than a pet’s nighttime routine. Several suggested he consider changing roommates or living arrangements if the issue continues.
