Body-camera footage showing the moments leading up to a federal agent shooting Marimar Martinez five times in Chicago in October has been released, fueling fresh criticism of the administration’s use of force in immigration operations and drawing reactions from across the political spectrum. Right-wing commentator Tim Pool shared the footage and wrote, “Trump is losing this.”

Why It Matters

Martinez, a 30-year-old U.S. citizen and teacher, was shot five times by a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a confrontation in Chicago in October. Afterward, she faced a felony charge following claims by the Department of Homeland Security that “law enforcement officers were ambushed by domestic terrorists that rammed federal agents with their vehicles,” a description officials linked to Martinez. A federal judge later dismissed the case against her after the Justice Department requested the dismissal.

The administration expanded immigration enforcement efforts in Chicago last year through Operation Midway Blitz, which began in early September. In recent months, enforcement tactics have faced increased scrutiny after two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis — Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti — were fatally shot by federal immigration officers.

What to Know

The newly released body-camera footage shows three Border Patrol agents inside a vehicle in Chicago, with a drawn gun visible in the video. At one point, an agent is heard saying, “It’s time to get aggressive and get the f*** out, because they’re trying to box us in.”

The footage and additional materials, including an email from Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, were released publicly by the U.S. attorney’s office on Tuesday.

In another moment, an agent says, “We’re going to make contact, and we’re boxed in.”

Just before the moment of impact, the driver — identified as Agent Charles Exum — sharply turns the steering wheel in Martinez’s direction, according to the video.

Separate surveillance footage from a nearby location appears to challenge the claim that the agents were boxed in, showing no vehicle directly in front of their car.

Among the materials released was an email from Bovino to Exum following the shooting that read: “In light of your excellent service in Chicago, you have much yet left to do!!”

Online reactions to the footage described it as evidence of excessive force and a broader overreach in immigration enforcement. Pool reposted the video with the caption, “Trump is losing this.” Brian Allen, an economics and geopolitical analyst with a large following on X, called the situation a “cover-up.”

In a statement issued Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said use-of-force incidents “are thoroughly investigated,” according to the Associated Press. The agency said Exum was placed on administrative leave.

What People Are Saying

A group opposed to the former president wrote on X that the body-camera footage — released after months of court battles — shows Border Patrol agents steering into Martinez before shooting her, contradicting DHS claims that she “ambushed” them.

Martinez’s attorney, Christopher Parente, said during a press conference: “This is a time where we just cannot trust the words of our federal officials.”

Rep. Robert Garcia, a California Democrat, wrote on X on February 4 that Martinez was unarmed, had no criminal record, and was shot five times. He called for accountability.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote in an October post that two individuals were arrested for allegedly driving vehicles and attacking federal officers, and said the FBI would pursue those who attack law enforcement.

What Happens Next

Martinez’s attorneys say they are pursuing a complaint against U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
