A massive 12-day search for an 82-year-old Alberta woman ended in tragedy Saturday night when authorities discovered her body in a rural region of Saskatchewan. While the woman did not survive the ordeal, her dog was recovered alive.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) located Diane Cooper at approximately 7:40 p.m. local time in the vicinity of Grandview, a rural area near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. RCMP Corporal Gina Slaney confirmed the discovery, noting that investigators do not consider the death suspicious.

The search for Cooper began on April 7, the day after she was last seen in Consort, Alberta. Surveillance footage later placed her and her vehicle—a grey Toyota C-HR—near the hamlet of Hoosier, Saskatchewan, at roughly 10:50 p.m. on April 6.

The investigation mobilized significant resources across two provinces. Search efforts included:

  • RCMP Air Services conducting aerial surveillance in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
  • Multiple ground detachments patrolling regional roadways and rural corridors.
  • Public appeals for information regarding the whereabouts of Cooper and her Dalmatian, Halo.

While the recovery of Cooper’s body brought a somber end to the missing persons case, officials confirmed that Halo survived the nearly two-week exposure to the elements.

In a statement released Sunday, Cooper’s granddaughter, Zoe Cooper, described the dog’s survival as a “miracle.” She noted that while Halo appeared “skinny and completely exhausted,” the animal remained relatively unscathed.

“We are absolutely brokenhearted,” Zoe Cooper stated, expressing gratitude for the “care and compassion” shown by the community and law enforcement during the search. She added that having answers allows the family to begin the healing process.

The RCMP has not released a specific cause of death, pending standard procedures, but reiterated that foul play is not suspected. The case highlights the challenges of missing persons investigations in the vast, sparsely populated regions of the Canadian Prairies, where rapid response and aerial support are critical to search operations.

The family has asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of the 82-year-old.
