Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell tripped and fell inside a Senate office building on Thursday, Oct. 16, during an encounter with a climate activist.

According to reports, a young woman with the Sunrise Movement approached the 83-year-old senator in a hallway of the Russell Senate Office Building and introduced herself before asking him a question about immigration enforcement.

In a video circulating online, the activist can be seen walking alongside McConnell and another man wearing an earpiece when she asked whether he supports ICE “taking working people off the streets and kidnapping them,” referencing recent immigration raids in cities like Chicago and Portland that have sparked criticism and reports of wrongful detainments.

McConnell, who appeared to move with a stiff gait and leaned on his aide for balance, stumbled and fell toward the end of the question, landing on his left side. Two people, including a Capitol Police officer, helped him back to his feet. As he noticed he was still being filmed, McConnell waved at the camera before being guided away.

Following the incident, Sunrise Movement executive director Aru Shiney-Ajay released a statement saying, “Mitch McConnell couldn’t even answer a simple question without falling down, and it’s certainly not the first time he hasn’t been able to answer young people.” The statement went on to criticize the aging leadership of both major political parties, calling their continued grip on power “costly” to the American people.

McConnell’s team has not issued a comment about the fall.

The longtime senator, who stepped down last year as leader of the Republican Senate Conference after 18 years, has previously faced questions about his health. The Thursday fall marked at least his third such incident since December.

In 2023, McConnell was hospitalized for nearly five days after a fall that caused a concussion and rib fracture. Months later, he froze mid-sentence during a Capitol Hill press conference, standing motionless for several seconds before colleagues helped him away. He later told reporters he was “fine.”

A similar freezing episode occurred a month later in Kentucky, when McConnell stopped speaking after being asked if he would run for reelection in 2026.

Following that episode, McConnell underwent medical testing, including MRI and EEG studies, as well as consultations with neurologists. The Senate’s attending physician later said there was “no evidence” of a seizure or stroke, suggesting lingering concussion symptoms and dehydration might have been contributing factors.

Not all of McConnell’s colleagues were convinced by that conclusion. Fellow Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a physician, told The Hill the explanation “was not believable,” adding that what he observed looked more like a neurological issue than dehydration.

McConnell’s current Senate term runs through January 2027.
