Carrie Elizabeth Romney, the sister-in-law of former U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, was found dead in a Los Angeles parking lot on Friday, October 10. She was 64.
“Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time,” a representative for Mitt Romney said in a statement.
According to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s representative, law enforcement responded around 8:30 p.m. PT on Friday to the 24500 block of Town Center Drive in a Valencia parking garage.
Authorities confirmed that a woman either jumped or fell from the parking structure. As reported by NBC Los Angeles, the garage is five stories tall and located near a Hyatt Regency hotel.

Although officials did not immediately release the woman’s identity, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office listed Carrie Romney’s date of death as Friday. The site recorded her place of death as “street.”
As of Monday, October 13, her cause of death remains deferred pending further investigation. Her body has been marked “ready for release.”
Mitt Romney, who served as the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007, ran for president in 2008, seeking the Republican nomination before withdrawing to endorse John McCain. He later became the GOP nominee in the 2012 presidential election but lost to President Barack Obama. Romney went on to serve as a U.S. Senator for Utah from 2019 until January 2025.
After announcing in September 2023 that he would not seek re-election, Romney officially retired at the end of his term.
