A woman recently shared on Reddit about an uncomfortable moment during a family dinner when her mother-in-law claimed credit for naming her 11-month-old daughter.

The woman explained that she and her husband, married for almost two years, picked their daughter’s name from a favorite character in a popular book and movie series. When she first told her mother-in-law about it, the older woman questioned the spelling but never suggested the name herself.

At the dinner, with relatives gathered around, her sister-in-law mentioned that the baby’s name was “a really good choice” by the mother-in-law. The mom was confused until her mother-in-law confirmed she had recommended it.

Surprised, the woman quickly corrected the story, saying she was the one who had chosen the name and that it was meaningful to her. She even asked her husband to confirm it, which he did—though awkwardly. Her mother-in-law brushed it off, saying names are a “family effort.”

Later, her husband told her she was right but called her response “tactless” for correcting his mother in front of others. He said it should have been done in private. She disagreed, saying the comment was made publicly, so she felt she needed to speak up right away.

The Reddit post sparked debate. Many commenters defended her, saying she had every right to correct false information in the moment. Now, the mom is left wondering if protecting the truth about her daughter’s name was worth the tension it caused.
