A Canadian mother has died after she and her family were struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street, authorities reported.
According to a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Guelph Police Service in Ontario said emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. local time on Friday, Sept. 19.
Investigators found that the couple was hit while walking in a crosswalk with their three-year-old daughter in a stroller.
“All three were transported to Guelph General Hospital where the mother, a 38-year-old Guelph woman, succumbed to her injuries,” police said.
“Her 38-year-old husband was treated for minor injuries and released,” authorities added. “Their daughter was airlifted to a Hamilton trauma centre as a precaution and was released from hospital the same night.”
The pickup driver, a 19-year-old man from Northern Ontario, remained at the scene and was not injured in the collision. It is unclear whether he will face charges.
Authorities have not publicly identified the driver, the victim, or her family. Police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
“There have been a lot of near misses at this intersection,” Joy Sammy, from the Guelph Junction Neighbourhood Group, told CTV News. “The fact that somebody lost their life — people have felt that really deeply.”
“It’s tragic and heartbreaking,” said parent Annica Napier, according to the outlet. “So many are deeply affected.”
