A mom was stunned to learn that her mother-in-law had secretly changed her baby’s formula while she was away on a short trip.

The original poster (OP) shared her experience on Reddit, explaining that she had to travel for a few days, so her mother-in-law stayed at her home to care for the baby. When OP returned, she was shocked to find a different brand of formula stocked in her kitchen cabinet.

“She bought a ton of it and said it was a better brand for the baby,” OP wrote. “My baby was doing great on the formula he was on — a standard one most parents use — and his pediatrician confirmed he had zero problems.”

OP said her husband dismissed her concerns and told her she should be thankful since his mother had purchased so much formula. But instead of feeling grateful, OP felt completely “undermined as a mother.” She questioned why her mother-in-law would risk causing digestive issues for a baby who was already thriving on his regular formula.

“I feel like my opinion as a mother just doesn’t matter, and there was no reason for all of this,” OP continued. “Feeling like a failure because I couldn’t breastfeed in the first place isn’t helping my emotions. I love that formula exists and he’s happy with it, but I already have some postpartum guilt on top of everything.”

In the Reddit comments, many users encouraged OP to switch back to her baby’s original formula immediately.

“Switch it back and tell her she won’t be needed to watch your child anymore,” one person advised. “Tell her, ‘Do not undermine me as a parent — that’s what you’ve done, and I won’t stand for it.’”

Another commenter emphasized that OP’s mother-in-law was completely out of line. “She’s not a pediatrician or your baby’s parent. No, you should NOT be grateful, and your husband should have stood up for you. What if the baby had an allergic reaction? No more unsupervised alone time with your baby.”

A third commenter called it a blatant “power play” and urged OP’s husband to take the situation seriously. “This is a major overstep. What if the baby had stomach issues or ended up in the ER? Your spouse needs to understand this was about control, not care.”
