A North Carolina woman who vanished more than two decades ago has been found alive, bringing relief to her family while raising new questions about her long absence.

On Friday, Feb. 20, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office announced that Michelle Hundley Smith, now 62, had been located after investigators received new information about her case. Smith had originally been reported missing on Dec. 31, 2001.

Authorities confirmed that detectives made contact with Smith at an undisclosed location within North Carolina.

“Michelle Hundley Smith was found alive and well,” the sheriff’s office stated. “At her request, her current whereabouts will remain undisclosed.”

Officials said Smith’s family has been notified of her discovery and informed of her decision to keep her location private.

Smith, a resident of Eden, North Carolina, was 38 years old at the time of her disappearance. Investigators said her husband first reported her missing in 2001 after she failed to return from a shopping trip.

According to authorities, Smith left her home on Dec. 9, 2001, to go Christmas shopping at a K-Mart in Martinsville, Virginia, approximately 17 miles away. She never returned.

An extensive investigation followed, with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office continuing to pursue leads for more than 20 years. Over time, multiple agencies joined the effort, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Smith’s family also remained active in the search. In 2018, her daughter Amanda created a Facebook page dedicated to gathering tips, while relatives, including Smith’s cousin Barbara Byrd, frequently spoke publicly to keep attention on the case.

After learning her mother had been found, Amanda shared a candid message on social media reflecting a mix of emotions.

“I am ecstatic, I am upset, I am heartbroken — I am all over the map,” she wrote. “Will I have a relationship once more with my mom? Honestly, I can’t answer that. My initial reaction is yes, but then I think of all the hurt. My mom is only human, just as we all are.”

Speaking to WFMY, Byrd described her reaction as both joyful and bewildered.

“I kind of want to go outside and scream, ‘She’s alive, she’s alive,’” Byrd said. “My biggest question is: What happened all those years ago? What made you leave?”

Despite the lingering uncertainty, Byrd emphasized gratitude.

“I understand and respect that she doesn’t want contact. I’m not angry,” she said. “The biggest answer today was that she is alive. Nothing else matters right now.”

While Smith’s reappearance closes a decades-old missing persons case, many questions surrounding her disappearance remain unanswered.
