The man charged in the fatal shootings of an Ohio dentist and his wife was previously married to one of the victims for under two years.

Michael David McKee, 39, has been arrested and charged in connection with the Dec. 30 killings of Monique Tepe, 39, and Spencer Tepe, 37, in Columbus, Ohio.

Court records show Monique Tepe married McKee in August 2015 and filed for divorce in June 2017, citing that the two were “incompatible.” The filings indicate the pair lived together for about eight months during the marriage and separated in March 2016.

Monique and Spencer Tepe were found shot to death just feet from their two young children, ages 4 and 1. The children were not physically harmed, and relatives have said they are struggling with how to explain the tragedy to them.

Authorities have not publicly identified a motive or said whether the couple had expressed concerns about McKee before the killings.

McKee was initially charged with two counts of murder after his arrest on Saturday, Jan. 10. Investigators say neighborhood surveillance video helped identify a suspect and trace a vehicle that arrived shortly before the deaths and left soon afterward. Police later linked that vehicle to McKee, and a criminal complaint states investigators found evidence indicating he was in possession of the vehicle both before and after the homicides.

The charges were later upgraded to aggravated murder, according to a Jan. 11 court filing.

McKee appeared in an Illinois court on Monday, Jan. 12. His attorney said he plans to enter not guilty pleas to the charges. McKee also waived extradition, clearing the way for his return to Ohio to face the allegations. His attorney indicated he could be transferred to Ohio as early as this week.
