Las Vegas police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a new father hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, including a brain bleed.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said the collision happened Monday, Jan. 12, around 5:15 p.m. local time, at the intersection of Marion Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard. Investigators say a white SUV — “possibly a 2020-2022 White Kia Sportage or similar vehicle” — struck a man riding a motorcycle.
Family members identified the motorcyclist as Matias Lagarreta. Police said he was ejected from the bike and left in the roadway as the SUV driver fled the scene. Investigators believe the vehicle may have damage on its right side.
A GoFundMe created for Lagarreta’s family states he was rushed to University Medical Center with a brain bleed and bruised lungs, then placed in the ICU in a medically induced coma.
Speaking to FOX 5 Vegas, Lagarreta’s wife, Ashley, said her husband often used his motorcycle for errands. She recalled that the couple had planned to go out together that day, but she decided to stay home.
“We were gonna run our errands together, but he said, ‘No, it’s OK. I’ll go on the motorcycle,’” she told the station.

The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, on Dec. 15, 2025. Ashley said she learned something was wrong when Lagarreta’s cousin reached out asking where he was.
FOX 5 reported that Lagarreta woke from the coma on Thursday, Jan. 15.
“I was able to tell him I love him, and he was able to say it back,” Ashley said, emotional.
She also said she hopes the driver eventually comes forward.
“It’s scary to think that I could lose the father of my child,” she told the outlet. “If you were scared, and that was the case, admit you were scared.”
Police are asking anyone who may have seen the crash — or who has dash-cam footage, doorbell video, or information that could help identify the SUV — to contact authorities.
“If you witnessed this crash, have dash-cam footage, doorbell video, or recognize the vehicle, please contact police immediately at 702-828-3595, or Crime Stoppers of Nevada, Inc. at 702-385-5555,” the LVMPD said.
