New information has been released regarding the final hours before the death of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland.

Authorities reported that the 24-year-old athlete died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after crashing his vehicle during a police chase north of Dallas in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 6.

According to new details obtained by The Dallas Morning News, Kneeland’s body was located inside a portable restroom near the intersection of Network Boulevard and Gaylord Parkway in Frisco, Texas. The location was close to where his vehicle had crashed in the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway and only minutes from The Star, the Cowboys’ headquarters.

Roughly three hours earlier, Texas DPS troopers attempted to pull Kneeland over in Addison for a traffic violation. He refused to stop, leading to a pursuit that ended when he crashed into a pickup truck near the Dallas Tollway access lanes, Texas DPS spokesperson Josue De La Cerda told the newspaper. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

As officers searched for Kneeland after discovering the abandoned vehicle, multiple North Texas agencies began receiving alerts indicating that he was in crisis. Kneeland had reportedly sent a “goodbye” message to loved ones, and his girlfriend Catalina reached out to authorities, informing them that he was armed and had a history of mental health struggles.

Around the same time, representatives from the NFL contacted the Plano Police Department with similar concerns.

Kneeland, a second-year player who had just scored his first NFL touchdown earlier in the week during Monday Night Football, was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

On Sunday, Nov. 9, NFL teams across the country held a moment of silence in his honor, including at the game in Berlin, Germany, where the Indianapolis Colts faced the Atlanta Falcons, according to The Athletic.
