Newly released crime scene photos reveal the half-eaten final meal of Xana Kernodle, one of the four University of Idaho students murdered in November 2022.
The images, part of more than 350 files released by Idaho State Police and obtained by PEOPLE, show the DoorDash delivery Kernodle picked up just minutes before her death.
Investigators believe Kernodle brought the Jack in the Box order into the kitchen after retrieving it from the front door. According to Idaho State Police Lt. Darren Gilbertson, she likely began eating before hearing a disturbance upstairs.
Authorities think Kernodle went to the third floor to investigate and may have encountered Bryan Kohberger in one of her roommate’s bedrooms. From there, she fled toward her own room, forcing Kohberger to chase her and abandon his knife sheath in the process. Surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen later told investigators she overheard a male voice saying, “It’s okay, I’m here to help you,” as noted in court documents.
Blood evidence suggests Kohberger caught Kernodle near the entrance to her bedroom, where the fatal attack began. One unanswered question is how and when he entered the home.
DoorDash records show the delivery was left outside at 3:59 a.m., while surveillance footage places Kohberger’s vehicle in a nearby lot at 4:06 a.m. Kernodle remained active on TikTok until 4:12 a.m. Around that same time, Mortensen reported hearing someone say there was a person inside the house, followed by footsteps moving between floors.

Upstairs, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen, both 21, were fatally attacked in Mogen’s bedroom. Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20, was also killed; investigators believe his injuries prevented him from helping Kernodle.
At 4:17 a.m., a surveillance camera close to the house captured the sound of whimpering, then a loud thud. By 4:20 a.m., Kohberger’s car was seen speeding away from the neighborhood.

The newly released photographs do not depict the victims or their bedrooms. Instead, they show Kernodle’s Jack in the Box bag on a cluttered kitchen table, alongside dirty dishes, red Solo cups, and an open jug of orange juice. A sticker on the bag read: “Order prepared for: Xana.” Wrappers and a half-eaten order of french fries were also found, suggesting Kernodle had been eating before she went upstairs to check on her roommates.
