New images released by the FBI are offering a clearer look at the person of interest connected to the mass shooting at Brown University over the weekend, which left at least two students dead.
Investigators obtained the images after canvassing neighborhoods near campus and requesting security-camera footage from residents. The three photos, released Monday, Dec. 15, show the person of interest wearing dark pants, a fleece jacket, and a hat and face mask that obscure much of the face.
Authorities said the photos provide a better view than earlier footage, which captured the individual from farther away and largely from behind.
At a Monday press conference, the FBI said it is “offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual.”
The shooting happened on Dec. 13, when a gunman exited a building on campus and disappeared after the attack. Investigators said the suspect’s identity and location remain unknown, and that search efforts have been complicated by weather — including roughly two inches of snow that fell on Providence a few hours after the shooting.

On Monday afternoon, FBI agents and Providence Police officers returned to the area around the scene to look for additional evidence. Agents were observed clearing snow from a lawn near campus in an attempt to recover items that may have been covered after the shooting.

An individual was taken in for questioning on Dec. 14 after FBI agents went to a hotel in Coventry, about 20 miles south of Providence. That person was released hours later. “It’s fair to say that there is no basis to consider him a person of interest, so that’s why he’s being released,” Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said at a Dec. 14 news conference.
Authorities said the attack occurred around 4 p.m. on Dec. 13 inside the Barus and Holley Building. A lone gunman opened fire in a hallway and then entered a lecture hall where about 60 students had just finished a two-hour winter-exam prep session. Witnesses in the room said the shooter made an unintelligible comment before firing.
At least two people were killed and nine others were injured. As of Monday, one injured person remained in critical condition, with family at the hospital.

Family members have identified the two victims as Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
Brown University canceled all exams after the attack and sent students home early for winter break. Officials have said there is no known ongoing threat to residents, while noting they do not know whether the shooter is still in the city or state.
