President Donald Trump faces a deepening political crisis as a new NBC News national poll reveals a “fed up” American electorate, with a majority of voters disapproving of his administration’s handling of the economy, foreign policy, and immigration.

The survey, conducted as the 2026 midterm cycle heats up, underscores a growing desire for change that could reshape the balance of power in Washington.

Economic Anxiety and the “Inflation” Trap

Despite the administration’s “America First” rhetoric, the poll suggests that voters remain unconvinced by the president’s economic stewardship. A staggering 62% of registered voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation and the rising cost of living.

  • Policy Impact: 48% of respondents believe Trump’s policies have actively harmed the economy.
  • Trade Wars: 55% of voters say his signature tariff policies have been detrimental, with only 33% seeing them as a benefit.

“The electoral data points… point to an American electorate that is once again fed up with those in power,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt, who conducted the survey alongside Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

Foreign Policy Friction: The Iran Conflict

The administration’s aggressive posture in the Middle East has also become a major liability. The poll, conducted between February 27 and March 3, shows a majority of voters oppose the recent U.S. military strikes on Iran.

The conflict, which escalated as the first midterm primaries began, has failed to trigger the typical “rally around the flag” effect, with many voters viewing the situation as a dangerous distraction from domestic concerns.

Immigration: A House Divided

While the president maintains a narrow base of support for border security—with 53% approval—his broader immigration enforcement tactics are increasingly unpopular.

  • ICE Sentiment: More than half of voters (52%) hold negative views of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  • Leadership Vacuum: The survey was completed just before the high-profile dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, leaving the administration’s strategy in a state of flux.

The Midterm Outlook

The data provides a clear tailwind for Democrats, who currently hold a 6-point lead (50% to 44%) on the generic congressional ballot. While Democrats still face internal challenges—specifically on who is better equipped to manage the economy—the sheer level of “establishment anger” suggested by Horwitt and McInturff suggests a volatile road ahead for the GOP.

As the 2026 primary season accelerates, the Republican party finds itself tethered to a president whose disapproval ratings have reached critical levels across nearly every major policy front.
