A 4-year-old girl in Afton, Okla., died after she was accidentally shot in the chest with a handgun, authorities say.
Investigators believe the shooting was unintentional, and the case is still under review, according to KSNF, KSN 16 and KGGF Radio.
Because of dangerous weather conditions, a medical helicopter could not respond. The child was instead transported to a hospital in the Miami, Okla., area, where she died, the outlets reported. The incident took place inside the family’s home.
“Our school community is grieving an unimaginable loss this evening — the passing of an Afton Elementary School student,” Superintendent O. Jay Bowen wrote in a letter to families, noting that counseling services would be available for students. He encouraged parents to reach out if their children need help coping with the tragedy.
No charges have been announced, per the outlets.
