A 29-year-old Kansas man faces first-degree murder charges following the death of his estranged wife, a Marine veteran and local broadcast engineer who was shot outside a Wichita residence last week.
Joshua Orlando was taken into custody on April 17 after Wichita Police responded to reports of a shooting. Authorities discovered 25-year-old Ivy Unruh with a gunshot wound to her upper body. Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene and initially charged Orlando with aggravated battery.
The legal stakes escalated significantly after Unruh succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital three days later. Prosecutors subsequently upgraded the charges to first-degree murder.
Unruh was a prominent member of the Wichita community, serving as a broadcast engineer for PBS Kansas. Her colleagues described her as a high-achieving professional with a bright future in media technology.
“She was very motivated,” said Victor Hogstrom, president of PBS Kansas. “She was trustworthy… smart and very intelligent. We’re all missing her.”

Beyond her professional career, Unruh was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Family and friends characterized her as a resilient individual who was actively seeking a fresh start at the time of the shooting.
While a specific motive has not been formally released by investigators, statements from the victim’s family suggest Unruh was attempting to escape a volatile domestic environment.
A memorial fund established to support her family noted that Unruh “had the courage to walk away from a dangerous situation” prior to the fatal encounter. Her death highlights the lethal risks often associated with the period of separation in domestic disputes.
Orlando is currently being held as the judicial process begins. As of Thursday, court records do not list a defense attorney for Orlando, and he has not yet entered a formal plea to the murder charge.
Wichita authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the April 17 shooting. They urge anyone with additional information regarding the case to contact the Wichita Police Department’s homicide unit.
