A stolen Cessna crashed into an airport hangar in Los Angeles — and authorities said the plane never actually got off the ground.
KABC, NBC4 and KTLA reported that the crash happened early Thursday morning, Dec. 18, at Van Nuys Airport, a busy general-aviation hub in the Los Angeles area.
According to NBC4, the aircraft — a Cessna C172, a four-seat, single-engine plane — was taken from a flight school at the airport. Footage shared by the outlet shows the plane’s nose protruding through a hole in a hangar wall, apparently created by the impact.
KTLA reported the crash occurred around 5 a.m. It wasn’t immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
Authorities said the plane never became airborne, according to KABC.
All three outlets reported that a suspect was detained after the crash, though the person was not immediately identified. NBC4 reported the suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of an aircraft.
Van Nuys Airport, located in the San Fernando Valley, is operated by Los Angeles World Airports, the agency that also runs Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
