A pregnant woman is upset with her husband after he told her she was “overreacting” when she asked guests to turn down loud music as their toddler tried to sleep during a recent vacation.

In a post on Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum, the 28-year-old woman explained that she and her 29-year-old husband were visiting her parents out of state with their 1-year-old child. This trip marked “his first big trip with a long plane ride, time difference and unfamiliar surroundings.”

She shared that “adjusting has been hard” for their son, “but he is doing his best,” adding that she makes an effort “not to let my child be an inconvenience to others or expect people to adjust their lives around him.”

During their family vacation, which took place at her parents’ friend’s house, the woman described a situation with nine adults in total. On the second night, she ran into difficulties with noise affecting her son’s ability to sleep.

“At 8:45 p.m., I laid my son down in a pack and play in our room. He fussed a little, so after five minutes I went back to soothe him. By 9 p.m., he was quiet. The room was dark, and his sound machine was on,” she wrote.

However, she noted, “This family eats late, and while setting the table, someone began clattering silverware loudly on the countertops,” which caused her toddler to wake up and cry.

While rocking him, she said, “someone started playing 80s music downstairs.” Initially, she did not mind, but the volume increased, and a group of women, including her mother, began singing and laughing loudly. She texted her husband, asking if he could have them turn the music down. He responded, “He is going to be fine.” She replied that her son was not falling asleep and that she was the one in the room. He insisted, “It is not that loud.”

She cracked the door open and realized the speaker was directly below their room. Waiting for a pause in the music, she attempted to lay her son down during a quiet moment, but the same song resumed at full volume with continued singing. Eventually, she laid her son down awake and went downstairs.

Calmly, she told the group she was turning the music down because it was directly beneath their room and was preventing her son from sleeping. Some adults agreed, but others commented that she was ruining the mood.

The woman said the situation left her feeling “emotional and frustrated.” She handed her husband the monitor and quietly went to the basement to calm down and cry without causing a scene. After 15 to 20 minutes, her husband came down and told her she was overreacting.

“He said our son has slept through louder noises and that I was being unreasonable,” she shared. “I reminded him there is a difference between sleeping through something and trying to fall asleep with it. He dismissed me, said I was not going to change his mind, and left.”

When she went back upstairs, one of the homeowners apologized for waking her son, which she appreciated. However, others, many of whom were drunk, made exaggerated jokes about whispering to avoid waking the baby. Feeling upset, she decided not to eat and went to bed around 10:15 p.m.

In the Reddit comments, many users criticized her actions. One person wrote, “You didn’t even ask, you calmly told them you were turning down music. You were a guest of a guest (your mother) at a place you were being included to do outdoor activities. Your family was being done a favor to be included. You never turn down people’s music or make any demands in that situation. You selfishly put a damper on your host’s evening.”

Another commented, “You did it without asking. Do not touch my stuff, and do not make me feel like an ass in my own home.”

One more added, “I think you were kidding yourself that nine adults at a social gathering would be quiet all evening so that one toddler could sleep. Your expectations were unreasonable.”
