A golden retriever in Massachusetts is back home and unharmed after a dramatic rescue from a frozen pond, thanks to the quick response of local firefighters.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 6, a Chatham resident let his dog outside for a brief play session, according to a press release from the Chatham Fire Rescue Department. The dog, a golden retriever named Goose, wandered onto the ice covering a nearby pond—aptly named Goose Pond. About 200 feet from shore, the ice suddenly gave way, plunging Goose into the frigid water.

Firefighters were dispatched at 3:20 p.m. The dog’s owner told responders that Goose had managed to get his head and paws up onto an ice shelf that was several inches thick, but he was still trapped in the water.

Three ice rescue technicians wearing survival suits moved onto the ice at 3:30 p.m. The rescue was swift: by 3:32 p.m., Goose was safely out of the water and reunited with his owner on shore.

Peter Hennigan, one of the ice rescue technicians involved, later explained that weather-related emergencies like this are always a concern during winter months. He also emphasized that the owner made the right decision by calling for help rather than attempting a rescue himself, which could have put another life at risk.

After the ordeal, Goose warmed up at home by resting in front of a fireplace. The owner was advised to take him for a veterinary check-up, but the dog showed no signs of serious distress, according to the department.

Another rescuer, Nick Ruggiere, shared that the owner and his dog were deeply grateful for the fast response. The firefighters were even invited inside briefly to make sure Goose was doing well. Ruggiere described Goose as a very sweet dog and said the moment spent watching him recover by the fire was especially rewarding.

Following the incident, the Chatham Fire Department shared a reminder on Facebook, urging pet owners to stay cautious around frozen bodies of water. Their message was clear: no matter how thick it looks, ice can be unpredictable—and when it comes to people and pets, “no ice is safe ice.”
