Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed by their son, Nick, according to multiple sources who say they have spoken with family members. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that account.
On Sunday, Dec. 14, around 3:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a call at a residence to provide medical assistance. When personnel arrived, they discovered a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside the home. Sources identified the victims as Rob and Michele.
Police say Nick, 32, is alive and has been taken in for questioning. No arrests have been announced.
Reiner was a director, producer, and actor behind a string of widely celebrated films. His directing work included This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992). He first rose to national prominence as Mike on Norman Lear’s sitcom All in the Family.

Born in the Bronx in 1947, Reiner was the son of comedian Carl Reiner and actor-singer Estelle Lebost. He and Michele met during the period when he was directing When Harry Met Sally… The couple married in 1989 and had three children.
Reiner was previously married to Penny Marshall, who died in 2018 at age 75 due to complications from diabetes.
In a 2016 interview, Nick spoke about a long struggle with drug addiction that began in his early teens and, at times, left him homeless. He said he entered and left rehabilitation programs starting around age 15, and described periods of living on the streets in multiple states as his addiction worsened.
Nick later said those experiences informed the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote. “Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” he said at the time.
