Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 919 into law Monday, officially initiating the transition of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to the Donald J. Trump International Airport. The legislation, which takes effect July 1, grants the state of Florida the exclusive authority to name major commercial service airports. The renaming remains pending final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The bill’s passage follows a contentious debate in the Florida Legislature regarding both state overreach and the costs associated with the rebranding. While original estimates for the name change reached $5.5 million, the Florida Senate ultimately recommended an allocation of $2.75 million to cover the logistical updates, including signage and navigational mapping.

Key provisions of the law include:
- State Authority: Shifting naming rights for major airports from local municipalities to the state government.
- Usage Rights: Requiring an agreement that grants Palm Beach County a “perpetual and unrestricted right” to use the new name for branding and operations.
- Trademark Activity: The Trump Organization has already filed trademark applications related to the name change, anticipating the legislative victory.
The rebranding is the latest in a series of tributes to the former president in his home state. In January, local officials renamed a primary access road connecting the airport to the Mar-a-Lago club as President Donald J. Trump Boulevard. Eric Trump, who advocated for the bill, praised the Governor and the Florida House for the “landmark tribute.” However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from legislative Democrats. House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa) characterized the bill as a “political stunt,” arguing that the Republican-led legislature is prioritizing symbolic gestures over the economic needs of residents.

Before the “Donald J. Trump International Airport” branding becomes official on terminals and flight towers, the state must clear regulatory hurdles with the FAA to ensure the name change does not interfere with federal aviation safety protocols or airspace designations.
