Samuel Bond Haskell IV, the son of prominent Hollywood producer and talent agent Sam Haskell, has died in jail just hours before he was due to appear in court on charges related to the gruesome murders of his wife and her parents, authorities confirmed Monday.
Lt. Michael Modica of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told KABC that Haskell was found dead in custody, though the cause of death has not yet been released.
Haskell, 37, was facing charges for the 2023 killings and dismemberment of his wife, Mei Li Haskell, 37, and her parents, Yanxiang Wang, 64, and Gaoshan Li, 72. The family lived together in Tarzana, Los Angeles, with the couple’s three young children, who were reportedly unharmed.
Gruesome Discovery and Charges
According to police, Haskell murdered the three victims at the family’s home and attempted to dispose of their remains in garbage bags. A torso believed to be Mei Li’s was later discovered in a dumpster in Encino after a passerby searching through trash called 911.
Authorities say Haskell hired four day laborers on November 7, 2023, to remove several large, heavy black trash bags from his home. One laborer reportedly looked inside a bag and spotted human remains. Alarmed, they refused payment, returned the money, and called police. By the time officers arrived, the bags were gone.
Surveillance footage later captured Haskell discarding something in a dumpster in Encino. He was arrested the next day after the torso was found.
Background and Legal Fallout
Haskell’s father, Sam Haskell, is a former Hollywood agent and Emmy-winning producer with a client list that includes Dolly Parton, George Clooney, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Samuel Haskell IV was facing a possible life sentence without the possibility of parole if convicted. Prosecutors described the case as one of the most disturbing homicide investigations in recent memory.
His sudden death in custody comes as a shocking twist in a case that has already shaken Los Angeles. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
