Sean “Diddy” Combs’s attorneys have laid out a detailed case for why the music mogul should receive a reduced prison sentence next month.
On Monday, Sept. 22, the legal team submitted a 182-page sentencing memo requesting that the 55-year-old serve no more than 14 months in prison for his two convictions of transportation to engage in prostitution, handed down on July 2.
In the filing obtained by PEOPLE, his lawyers argued, “It is the only just and fair sentence that could be imposed.”
“Mr. Combs’s near-13 months in prison has been life-changing, productive, and a testament to his desire to return to his family and community and lead the best life possible,” the memo states. “He has taken the time to achieve necessary rehabilitation from day one at the MDC [Metropolitan Detention Center] — including getting clean of all substances.”
The sentencing memo also delved into Diddy’s personal history, highlighting the murder of his father when he was just 3 years old and the “violent” relationships he endured with former girlfriends, which were connected to his convictions.

Diddy’s legal team emphasized the “profound form of trauma” he has faced throughout his life, as well as his ongoing battle with “serious substance abuse.”
“Like every addict, his behavior while on painkillers was erratic and unpredictable, and often the reason behind any assaults discussed at the trial,” the filing states.
Since his incarceration, the lawyers note, Diddy has achieved sobriety for the first time in years and has taken an active role in supporting and inspiring other inmates.
The memo also points out that the Bad Boy Records founder has no prior criminal history and is the father of seven children, with an elderly mother who depends on him.
“He has served over a year in one of the most notorious jails in America—yet has made the most of that punishment,” the filing reads. “It is time for Mr. Combs to go home to his family, so he can continue his treatment and try to make the most of the next chapter of his extraordinary life.”

The lawyers concluded that “a sentence no greater than 14 months is plainly ‘sufficient, but not greater than necessary’ to accomplish the purposes of sentencing.”
Diddy was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering on July 2, but convicted on two lesser prostitution charges. When sentenced on Oct. 3, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison if consecutive maximum terms are applied. Prosecutors, however, have recommended a sentence of 51 to 63 months.
