A widening federal investigation into a network of unlicensed biological laboratories has intensified following a 2026 raid in Las Vegas, sparking renewed national security alarms and scrutiny over regulatory oversight of hazardous pathogens.
The investigation, which began with a chance discovery in a Central California warehouse, now points to a sophisticated operation spanning multiple states. Federal agents recently raided a Las Vegas property linked to Israeli national Ori Solomon, seizing over 1,000 samples of unknown liquids and advanced laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and biosafety cabinets.
Investigators confirmed the materials bear a striking resemblance to those recovered from a notorious illegal lab in Reedley, California.
The Reedley Connection
The trail began in 2023 when a routine building inspection in Reedley uncovered a clandestine facility operating without permits. Inside, authorities found approximately 1,000 laboratory mice and hundreds of vials labeled with high-risk pathogens, including COVID-19, HIV, and Ebola.
The Reedley site was linked to Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese national currently facing federal charges. U.S. prosecutors allege Zhu orchestrated a $1.7 million fraudulent COVID-19 testing scheme, importing kits from China and rebranding them as American-made.
A subsequent congressional inquiry revealed deeper financial complexities, documenting over $1.3 million in unexplained payments to Zhu from Chinese banks.
National Security and Regulatory Gaps
The discovery of a second site in Las Vegas has shifted the focus from a localized public health nuisance to a potential systemic threat. Law enforcement agencies are now actively searching for additional undiscovered facilities that may be operating under similar clandestine conditions.
The case has also exposed friction between local and federal authorities. Reedley City Manager Nicole Zieba previously criticized the initial federal response, suggesting that early warnings from local officials were dismissed.
“It felt as though agencies didn’t want anything to do with it,” Zieba stated, highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles in addressing unlicensed labs handling biohazardous materials.
Ongoing Risks
While the FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintain there is no confirmed evidence of an active biological threat to the public, the motive behind the storage of these pathogens remains under investigation.
Authorities are now focusing on the intersection of medical fraud and the illicit handling of biological agents. The Las Vegas raid suggests the operation was more resilient and geographically diverse than initially assessed.
