Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has become one of the clearest Republican voices to publicly rebuke President Donald Trump over his escalating rhetoric toward Iran, denouncing his warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight” as beyond the bounds of legitimate diplomacy. Trump made the threat in a Truth Social post tied to his demands on Iran during the widening U.S.-Iran conflict.

In a statement, Murkowski rejected the White House argument that Trump’s language was simply hard-nosed negotiating strategy. She said the president’s threat “cannot be excused away as an attempt to gain leverage in negotiations with Iran,” calling the rhetoric “an affront” to the ideals the United States has tried to uphold for nearly 250 years. She warned that such language damages America’s standing and puts Americans at greater risk at home and abroad.

Murkowski also drew a line between Iran’s ruling regime and the Iranian people, urging restraint from both sides. She argued that the Islamic Republic should not be conflated with Iran’s broader civilization and said leaders in Washington and Tehran must step back from what she described as dangerous saber-rattling before the crisis spins further out of control.

Her remarks landed as Trump’s threat drew condemnation from abroad and unease inside his own party. Pope Leo XIV called the threat “truly unacceptable,” while international legal experts cited by Reuters said attacks on civilians or civilian infrastructure could violate the laws of war. Reuters also reported that some Republicans were rattled by the language even as most continued to stand by the president publicly.

Hours after issuing the threat, Trump reversed course and announced a two-week ceasefire framework, saying he would suspend attacks while negotiations continued. Reuters and AP reported that the truce was tied to talks over reopening the Strait of Hormuz and was helped by Pakistani mediation. The abrupt shift only intensified scrutiny of Trump’s approach, raising fresh questions in Washington over whether the administration is pursuing a coherent war strategy or lurching between brinkmanship and retreat.

Within the GOP, criticism has remained limited. But Murkowski’s statement stood out because it directly challenged not just Trump’s words, but the broader defense offered by his allies: that threatening annihilation is a form of leverage. Her answer was blunt. It is not strategy, she suggested. It is reckless.
