A woman turned to Reddit for guidance after a heated dispute with her brother over their late aunt’s inheritance.
Posting anonymously to the popular forum, the 30-year-old explained that her Aunt Bea left her entire estate to her — even though it was initially intended for someone else.
“This is long but the details are necessary for the full picture,” she began, noting that while she used fake names for everyone in the story, there was one exception: Troy, “the goodest boy,” a senior dog who became family after Aunt Bea lost her only son more than 15 years ago.
“Troy became her son in a 4-legged friend,” she wrote, adding, “She definitely liked him more than any of us or anyone in general.” Aunt Bea doted on Troy, giving him constant attention and affection.

Everything changed in February of last year when Aunt Bea was hospitalized after complications from a knee replacement. “That just started a snowball of other health issues, eventually taking her in October,” the woman shared.
During Bea’s hospitalization, the woman’s brother, John, 35, took Troy in. “John did absolutely everything for him the first 3 months until he moved in with his boyfriend,” she said. Once John moved, pets weren’t allowed — so Troy stayed with her.
John continued to stop by two or three times a week to help with some of the special routines Aunt Bea had for Troy, but the woman said the rest of the daily care fell entirely on her.
“He seriously was the best dog ever & old as dirt, so I did my absolute best to follow Aunt Bea’s request for Troy,” she wrote. “I really did try to give him the best rest of his life without his mom.”
Almost a year later, Troy passed away. “My kids & I took it harder than I thought we would,” she admitted. She created a garden memorial and buried his ashes with Aunt Bea, fulfilling one of her final wishes.
She thought that chapter was closed — until an attorney contacted her about Aunt Bea’s estate.
After meeting with the lawyer, she learned that while her aunt didn’t have a large fortune, what remained was left entirely to her. “I literally had no clue,” she said. “I didn’t know what was happening with her estate, nor did I really care.”

John, however, was furious. She explained that during a hospital visit, Aunt Bea had told John her estate would go to whoever cared for Troy — and at the time, that was him. But after he moved out and left Troy with her, the situation changed.
When he learned she inherited everything, “he flipped out,” she wrote. “Calling me a mooch, spreading lies about my care for Troy & other heinous things that just aren’t true.”
The siblings haven’t spoken in over a month, and she says John is still telling others negative things about her. She’s using the inheritance to give her family some financial breathing room.
“I am taking what Aunt Bea left me to get my little family just a bit ahead for the first time,” she said, before asking the question at the heart of her post: “So I ask, AITAH for claiming her inheritance?”
Responses were split. Some argued it should be divided equally, while others believed she was the rightful recipient. “John did that for, what, 3 months?” one commenter wrote. “And then you did the rest for another 9? Sounds like you fulfilled your aunt’s wishes and John didn’t.”
For now, she remains confident that she honored both Aunt Bea and Troy in the best way possible.
