Shelter Finds Taped Box With Note in the Cold—Can’t Believe What’s Inside

A taped box sat tucked into a corner along a building’s exterior, left out in subfreezing temperatures with a handwritten note asking for help. What staff discovered inside set off an urgent, emotional rescue.

A client at the Pennsylvania SPCA’s clinic saw someone place the box outside the shelter’s doors in the early morning of December 9, a representative told Newsweek. The client ran inside to alert staff, who rushed out, opened the box and found a frightened dog staring up at them.

In the note, the dog’s owner explained they were facing eviction and felt trapped with no other choice but to leave their pet at the shelter. The situation reflects a wider trend: in the first half of 2022, 40 percent of dogs relinquished by owners were surrendered due to housing or financial constraints, according to Shelter Animals Count.

In a December Facebook post, the Pennsylvania SPCA said the dog—later identified as Tangi—was trembling with fear and began hyper-salivating from intense stress. Even so, staff noted she remained gentle throughout her exam, repeatedly leaning into team members and seeking comfort and attention.

“We were both heartbroken for Tangi and her previous owner,” the representative told Newsweek. “They seemingly had to make a choice that they did not want to, but felt they had no other option.”

The team estimated Tangi is around 9 months old. Her exact breed is unknown, though the representative said many suspect she may be a Shiba Inu mix.

Tangi was placed on a 48-hour stray hold to allow a potential owner to reclaim her, but no one came forward. Not long after the painful drop-off, her story took a brighter turn: she was adopted this past weekend.

With more than 49,000 likes, 7,900 comments and 3,500 shares, the shelter’s Facebook post prompted an outpouring of relief that Tangi wasn’t left outside for long—along with widespread sympathy for the person who surrendered her.

“This is so awful for both parties involved. They tried to contain her the best they could. They wanted her to be somewhere safe,” one commenter wrote.

Another added: “…I can’t imagine the heartache for both of them.”

The Pennsylvania SPCA said this isn’t the first time an animal has been abandoned outside the shelter, though the representative described it as “not too frequent.” Still, each case is painful—and the team wants people in crisis to know help exists.

“We want our community to know that support is available through us and the many rescues and shelters in our area,” the representative said. “If something is urgent, we urge the individuals to come inside and talk with us! We are here to help.”
