TUCSON, Ariz. — More than one month after the high-profile abduction of Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, law enforcement officials indicate they are gaining significant momentum. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed Tuesday that investigators are “definitely closer” to identifying a suspect in a case that has gripped the nation and mobilized the Tucson community.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was taken from her home on Feb. 1. Despite weeks of intensive searching and the analysis of thousands of hours of digital evidence, no arrests have been made. However, in an interview with NBC’s Liz Kreutz that aired March 3, Nanos expressed a renewed sense of optimism.

“I think that investigators are definitely closer,” Nanos stated. “We’ve got a lot of intel, a lot of leads, but now it’s time to just go to work.”

New Leads: The Masked Intruder and the ‘Walmart’ Backpack

The investigation has centered heavily on doorbell camera footage captured the morning of the disappearance. The video shows a masked, armed individual attempting to enter the Guthrie residence shortly before Nancy’s pacemaker was disconnected from its tracking device—a detail that remains one of the most chilling aspects of the case.

Sheriff Nanos disclosed a critical shift in the forensic analysis of the intruder’s gear. While authorities initially believed a backpack worn by the suspect was purchased directly from Walmart, they are now exploring secondary markets.

“We’ve now learned that maybe it wasn’t purchased out of Walmart,” Nanos said. “That backpack is new, it’s exclusive to Walmart, but who’s to say I didn’t buy it and put it on eBay? That’s what we’re looking into.”

Analyzing a ‘Sea’ of Digital Evidence

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is currently sifting through a massive influx of data, including:

  • Neighborhood Surveillance: Clips from dozens of neighbors, including a vehicle seen speeding 2.5 miles from the home at the time of the abduction.
  • Traffic Logs: Nanos noted they are cross-referencing the suspicious vehicle against “hundreds of thousands of other vehicles” on the road that day.
  • Proprietary Intelligence: The Sheriff admitted to withholding specific details to protect the integrity of the prosecution. “I would be very neglectful and irresponsible… to share that with everybody,” he noted, citing the need for “time” to convert leads into an arrest.

A $1 Million Reward and a Family’s Plea

On March 2, marking the one-month anniversary of the disappearance, Savannah Guthrie, her sister Annie, and brother-in-law Tommasso Cioni visited a growing makeshift memorial outside their mother’s home. The shrine, overflowing with yellow flowers and cards, has become a symbol of the community’s support.

“We feel the love and prayers from our neighbors, from the Tucson community and from around the country,” Savannah Guthrie shared via Instagram. “Please don’t stop praying and hoping with us. Bring her home.”

The Guthrie family has significantly increased the pressure on potential informants, offering a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery or the arrest of those responsible.

What’s Next in the Investigation

While the Sheriff remains “absolutely” certain the case will be solved, the investigation now enters a meticulous phase of digital forensics and third-party sales tracking. The disconnect of the pacemaker suggests a level of technical awareness or premeditation that investigators are using to profile the suspect.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Nancy Guthrie remains missing. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the masked intruder or the Walmart-exclusive backpack to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
