The suspension of six Secret Service agents responsible for safeguarding former President Donald Trump during the July 13, 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has sparked renewed criticism and calls for stronger accountability.
The disciplinary action, confirmed by the agency to Fox News, comes just days before the release of a Senate report expected to detail a series of security lapses that allowed a gunman to carry out a deadly assassination attempt.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., called the suspensions “the absolute bare minimum,” writing on X, “Given the shocking security failures that day, this is the least that should have happened.”
‘Why Weren’t They Fired?’
Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, also questioned the timing and severity of the disciplinary measures. Responding to a user asking why the suspensions didn’t happen sooner, Lee replied, “The Deep State is deliberately slow,” and pledged to investigate why the agents were not terminated outright.
Rally Tragedy
The July 13 shooting claimed the life of 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, a husband and father who died shielding his family. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire with an AR-15–style rifle from a rooftop roughly 400 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking. Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear but survived.
Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer called the suspensions “expected” and blamed the agency’s failure for Comperatore’s death. “The Secret Service’s incompetence cost a life,” she wrote on social media.
Pattern of Failures
The fallout from the Butler shooting was compounded weeks later when a second assassination attempt targeting Trump occurred in West Palm Beach, Florida. That incident prompted then–Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign under intense pressure.
Upcoming Senate Report
The timing of the suspensions — which took place quietly in February — has drawn additional scrutiny as lawmakers prepare to unveil a report detailing the breakdowns in planning and oversight that led to the Butler incident.
Public outrage continues to mount, with critics across the political spectrum demanding broader reforms and accountability measures to ensure such failures don’t happen again.
