A woman accusing New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs of assault claims the situation escalated after she demanded payment she says she was owed for her work as a private chef.

The alleged incident occurred on Dec. 2 at Diggs’ $2.5 million home in Dedham, Massachusetts, about 15 miles south of Boston.

According to a police report, the woman said she approached Diggs about back pay she believed he owed her, and the conversation quickly turned tense. She told officers she was in her bedroom when Diggs entered after the two had been engaged in an ongoing text exchange about the disputed payment.

During their discussion, Diggs allegedly became angry. The woman claimed he then slapped her across the face, prompting her to push him away. She further alleged that Diggs attacked her again, attempting to choke her by wrapping his arm around her neck.

The woman told police she struggled to breathe and feared she might lose consciousness, alleging that as she tried to pull his arm away, he tightened his grip. She claimed Diggs later released her and threw her onto the bed before leaving the room and saying, “Thought so.”

She left the home that night but did not immediately contact law enforcement. The woman said she was initially reluctant to file a report and did not speak with police until Dec. 16. On Dec. 23, she contacted authorities again and said she wished to press charges.

Diggs, who is in the first year of a three-year, $69 million contract with the Patriots and recently welcomed a baby with his girlfriend Cardi B, is scheduled to be arraigned in Dedham District Court on Jan. 23. He faces a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of assault.

Diggs has not commented publicly. His attorney, David Meier, issued a statement denying the accusations, calling them “unsubstantiated” and “uncorroborated,” and asserting that they were never investigated because, he said, they did not occur. Meier described the allegations as the result of an unresolved financial dispute between employer and employee.

The Patriots said in a statement that Diggs has informed the organization he categorically denies the allegations. The team said it supports him and will continue to gather information while cooperating with authorities and the NFL as necessary.

The NFL said it is monitoring the situation.
