An 18-year-old man has died from injuries sustained during a catastrophic climbing accident on the Sunshine Coast, marking a double tragedy just days after his girlfriend perished in the same fall.
The Queensland Police Service confirmed Wednesday that the victim, identified by local media as Jack Thatcher, passed away in a hospital after three days in critical condition. His death follows that of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Lorielle Georgina, who was pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday, March 15.
Details of the Incident
The couple, both residents of Brisbane, were part of a group of six hikers navigating Mount Beerwah when the accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. local time. Investigative reports indicate the following:
- The Fall: Georgina reportedly fell approximately 200 feet, while Thatcher plunged an estimated 300 feet down the steep terrain.
- Environmental Factors: Senior Sgt. Kylie McLellan noted that light rain had fallen shortly before the accident, rendering the rock face “quite slippery.”
- Trail Status: Crucially, the trail had been officially closed to the public due to hazardous conditions caused by heavy rainfall across the Sunshine Coast region.

The remaining members of the hiking party, which included Georgina’s sister, were uninjured and subsequently extracted from the mountain by emergency responders.
A Community in Mourning
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Brisbane community. Authorities have described the incident as an “absolute tragedy” involving young people engaging in what should have been a healthy outdoor activity.
Queensland Police have confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the exact circumstances of the deaths. While police have not officially released the names, the families have been identified through community outreach and fundraising efforts.
“Jack’s spirit, his sense of adventure, and the joy he brought to others is a beautiful reflection of the impact he had on everyone around him,” a family representative shared via a memorial fundraiser.

Safety Concerns and Investigation
Mount Beerwah is known for its challenging vertical sections, which become notoriously dangerous during inclement weather. Local authorities are expected to review safety protocols and the effectiveness of trail closure enforcement following this incident.
Two separate GoFundMe campaigns have been established to assist the families of Thatcher and Georgina with funeral expenses and support.
