A 16-year-old girl has died following a collision between a school minibus and a car in Tadcaster, England, on Monday, Dec. 1, according to a news release from North Yorkshire Police.
Eleanor “Ellie” Hague was traveling as a passenger in a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus when it collided with a Hyundai i10 at around 12:30 p.m. local time. Tadcaster is located roughly 200 miles north of London.
Ellie was one of nine passengers on the minibus, all of whom were students from Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School.
Emergency crews attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another teenage girl was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. The remaining passengers, along with the bus driver, were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 40-year-old woman from Leeds, England, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She has been released on conditional bail.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Ellie’s school issued a statement saying the community was “deeply saddened” by the “tragic loss of one of our students.”
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy,” the statement said. “We are totally committed to providing every member of our school community with unwavering support and empathy as we come together as one.”
Tadcaster Grammar School added that “appropriate support will be available” to all students and staff. The school was closed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, and is expected to reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Kirsty Poskitt, a representative of North Yorkshire Council, offered her “heartfelt condolences to the young people involved” and to Ellie’s family, according to the BBC. She described it as “an incredibly sad day for our town.”
