A chilling new true crime series is revisiting the disturbing 1995 murder of 15-year-old Elyse Pahler — a case that continues to haunt the quiet California community where it happened.

Investigation Discovery’s A Killer Among Friends, a six-part series produced and narrated by actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, delves into the horrifying story of Pahler’s death at the hands of three teenage classmates in Arroyo Grande, California. The show premiered July 14 and airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on ID, with episodes available to stream on HBO Max.

According to The San Luis Obispo Tribune, Elyse was lured to a secluded eucalyptus grove by Royce Casey, 17, Joseph Fiorella, 15, and Jacob Delashmutt, 16. There, the teens carried out a premeditated murder — stabbing her repeatedly in what they later described to investigators as a “satanic sacrifice.”

Authorities searched for Elyse’s body for eight months before one of the boys confessed. All three were eventually convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life.

The motive stunned even seasoned detectives: the teens allegedly believed that killing a virgin would give them supernatural powers to enhance their death-metal music skills. After murdering Elyse, they reportedly returned to her body in the days that followed and committed unspeakable acts, according to court records cited by the Tribune.

ID’s new series examines the ripple effects of such a brutal crime within a friend group, focusing on how betrayal, jealousy, and violence can hide in plain sight. “Amidst the hunt for a killer, no one is entirely certain who they can trust,” the network said in a press release. “Secrets bubble to the surface, and the true depth of each case becomes clear.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt, known for her work on Ghost Whisperer and 9-1-1, said producing the series allowed her to bring a new level of storytelling to true crime. “This series blends a kaleidoscope of perspectives to tell each of these tragedies — the dynamics within groups, the unraveling of trust, and the aftermath of betrayal,” she said in a statement to PEOPLE.

The Killer Among Friends continues through mid-August, spotlighting real-life cases where those closest to the victim may not be who they seemed.
