Teen Girl Allegedly Lured to Woods and Killed by Classmates After Secret Late-Night Meeting

When 14-year-old Danika Troy slipped out of her Florida home on a recent Sunday night, she thought she was sneaking away for romance — a quiet meetup with a boy from school she liked.

Instead, it ended in tragedy.

On Thursday, Dec. 4, authorities announced that Danika’s body had been discovered in a wooded area in Pace, not far from the home she shared with her mother, Ashley Troy, and her 8-year-old sister.

According to Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson, two boys, ages 14 and 16 — the older boy being the one Danika had a crush on — allegedly lured her to the remote spot.

“This is where it gets really horrific,” Johnson told reporters.

“The 16-year-old…stole his mother’s handgun and shot Danika Troy,” he alleged.

“It’s bad enough you kill a 14-year-old,” Johnson continued. “You’re 14. You’re 16. They shot her multiple times, then they set her on fire.”

Johnson said investigators are still working to determine a motive.

Danika’s mother believes her daughter thought she was going to see someone she cared deeply about.

“She thought she was sneaking out to spend time with the boy she loved,” Ashley says, referring to the 16-year-old suspect.

“She was currently grounded for doing the same thing. Kids just don’t think about consequences. She trusted him. It wasn’t hard to lure her. He had her heart. She would do anything for him.”

On Monday, Dec. 1, Ashley reported Danika missing.

“She was gone before I woke up,” she recalls.

At first, she didn’t fear the worst. “I thought he was hiding her to be together,” she says.

“I had no idea those boys could do this.”

While Danika believed she had found true love, Ashley says the 16-year-old boy didn’t see it the same way.

“He led her on for three months,” she says.

Learning how her daughter died left Ashley reeling.

“I’m a mess,” she says.

Danika’s younger sister is also struggling to understand life without her big sister.

“She’s just numb,” Ashley says. “Her sister adored her.”

Ashley plans to attend a candlelight vigil for Danika on Monday, Dec. 8, near Pace.

She says she’s deeply grateful for the support pouring in, including from a friend who started a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses, as well as from the broader community — especially her church.

“My church has been handling everything and surrounding us with love and support,” she says.

Even now, Ashley finds it hard to accept that her daughter is truly gone.

“She just wanted to be in love for Christmas,” she says. “She was innocent and just wanted to be loved.”

“She adds: “Jesus has her now.”
